Customer Support
I want to upgrade my Miva Merchant store software.
If you wish to upgrade your Miva Merchant store, you can do it yourself by following the instuctions below, or you can have Modwest upgrade it for a $50 service fee. Request an upgrade now... (login required).Do-It-Yourself Directions
If you plan to upgrade your store yourself, please consult relevant FAQs and support sections of Miva's website, and follow the instructions below.
Great care will need to be taken when browsing through Miva Merchant files on the server, since modifying or removing the wrong files can result in a damaged store. The only way to fix a store that has been damaged this way is to re-install it (something Modwest can provide for a service fee), or to restore from a backup you took before you began.
The only labor or support included with the Miva service is the initial Miva setup. Although the software for upgrades is free to Miva customers, the labor involved in upgrading is not included with any E-Commerce package. If you wish to upgrade your Miva Merchant store, you can do so on your own at any time and the instructions that follow will help you.
To upgrade, the necessary files must first be placed under your store directory, which then will allow you to go to an upgrade page of your store with your browser. We do not guarantee the success of an upgrade nor provide support for upgrades that result in broken stores. If you are having problems with an upgrade, please contact Miva Support directly.
Upgrading Miva Merchant
First, make a backup of your existing store before upgrading.
Now, if you received an email directly from Miva announcing the availablility of a Miva Merchant Upgrade (not Miva Empressa, or any other product), you need to download the new Merchant package from them by using FTP. Their email announcement includes the FTP login information that you need in order to download the product.
You will need to use FTP to download the package from Miva directly to the server, not down to your own computer. To do this, get a shell prompt on the server and type the following commands:
When prompted for an FTP username, enter the username that was included in the email you received from Miva that announced the upgrade. Do the same for the password prompt.
cd /tmp
ftp ftp.miva.com
Now that you have logged into Miva's FTP site, get into the directory that contains the new release so that you can download it, by typing the following command:
cd v4.xx
If you get an error when typing the above, get a directory listing so that you can see which directory you need to get into by typing:lsYou need to find the directory that looks like it contains the latest version 4 release and then "cd [directory name]". |
Once inside that directory, type:
lsto see a listing of the downloads available. You want to pick the one that has the highest release number, and that also ends in ".tar.gz". When you see that file, download it by typing:
get Merchant-v4.[new version]-bundle.tar.gzwhere "new version" is the highest release number that you see. Do not actually type the square brackets.
Now you are finished FTP'ing, so type:
exitand you will return to the shell prompt.
Now uncompress the compressed package that you just downloaded by typing:
tar -xvzf Merchant-v4.[new version]-bundle.tar.gz(the above should be typed all on 1 line, even though it may look wrapped on 2 lines in your browser) where "new version" is the high release number that you saw. Do not actually type any square brackets.
Now you have uncompressed the distribution, so go into the first directory by typing:
cd Merchant2If you type "ls" inside that directory, you will see a file called "upgrade.mvc" and a directory named "4.xx" where "xx" is actually the release version number. You must move that directory and that upgrade file underneath your base store directory as follows.
| For most people, the base store directory of your existing Merchant site is "Merchant2" and is located at "/htdocs/www/Merchant2". Other people may have the base store directory named "store" or "shop", which would be located at /htdocs/www/store or /htdocs/www/shop, respectively. If you are unsure what your base store directory is, go to the Miva Merchant store on your website and look at the address in the white address bar of your browser. It will look like "http://www.yourdomain.com/[something]/"and the "something" is the name of your base store directory which is located under /htdocs/www/. |
Now move the new directory and the upgrade file under your base store directory with the following command which assumes your base store directory is "Merchant2". If your store is not at "Merchant2", then replace "Merchant2" in the command below with the correct name of your base store directory.
mv 4.[xx] /htdocs/www/Merchant2/where the "xx" is the version number of the release that you downloaded. Do not actually type any square brackets.
mv upgrade.mvc /htdocs/www/Merchant2/You have now noved all the necessary files into place so that you can upgrade your Miva Merchant store.
However, Miva recommends that you take the following steps to help prevent any problems during upgrade:
- Login to your Miva Admin page using your normal Miva username and password.
- Make sure your are in the "Advanced Administration" and not "Simple Administration". If you are in the Simple Admin, there will
be a link in the top right corner to get into the Advanced Admin.
- Unfold the Stores item and unfold your store name.
- Put your store in Maintenance mode by clicking the store name, then Maintenance, then setting the store to be in Maintenance mode immediately.
- Unfold your Storename, then the Utilities item at the bottom of the left menu, then Pack Data Files
- Under your unfolded store and Utilities, click Delete Shopping Baskets.
- Under the store Utilities item, Pack data files. If you experience a timeout, keep clicking the link until it completes.
- Unfold Order Processing (above Utilities and under Store menu), and unfold Batched Orders. If there is anything under this
item, delete it.
- Logout of the Miva Admin
http://www.yourdomain.com/Merchant2/upgrade.mvcwhere "yourdomain.com" is your actual domain name and "Merchant2" is the name of your base store directory.
Use your Miva Admin username and password when prompted on the upgrade webpage. Click "Next" as you go through the webpage's upgrade steps. If it tells you it has found a non-upgradable module, click "OK" to disable that module if you know you are not using it. If you are using that module, choose the appropriate option to continue without upgrading that particular module.
At the end of the process you will reach a page that says "Do not disconnect or close your browser" and you must leave the browser alone until that page says that it is finished. This may take 5 minutes or longer. When the page says that it has completed, your store will be running the newest version of Miva Merchant.
If anything goes wrong or your store becomes broken, the only way to fix it is to restore from the backup you made.
