Do you provide PEAR?

PEAR (PHP Extension and Application Repository) is a collection of PHP scripts organized in functional packages similar to Perl's CPAN.

PEAR is installed on the shared system at /usr/local/lib/php. The repository contains the newest releases of all stable packages. A current listing of packages resides at pear.modwest.com. If a package is missing or needs an upgrade, contact support and they will install the package within 24 hours.

There are many packages in various states like beta and alpha which Modwest will not install. To utilize the latest versions and newer packages, you may find it convenient to maintain your own PEAR repository. Just remember that with over 200 separate packages, PEAR could add up to a lot of disk space.

Additionally, any PEAR package which requires compilation from C source code will not work, since no compiler is available on the shared system.

First, log in and run this command to get your local environment set up.

**PHP's XML extension must be on for the PEAR executable to work.**

pear -s -c /.pearrc \
-d doc_dir=/pear/docs \
-d ext_dir=/pear/ext \
-d php_dir=/pear/lib \
-d data_dir=/pear/data \
-d test_dir=/pear/tests \
-d cache_dir=/pear/cache \
-d bin_dir=/pear/bin
(The backslashes on all but the last line are important - they 'escape' the line breaks.)

(Note: If you receive the error "relocation error: /usr/local/libexec/php/mbstring.so: undefined symbol..." you will need to comment out the mbstring.so extension in /etc/php.ini for this install and re-enable it after PEAR is configured properly.)

Then, download the base packages with the following command:

pear -c /.pearrc install Archive_Tar PEAR \
Console_Getopt XML_RPC

downloading Archive_Tar-1.2.tgz ...
...done: 14,792 bytes
install ok: Archive_Tar 1.2
downloading PEAR-1.3.1.tgz ...
...done: 95,968 bytes
install ok: PEAR 1.3.1
downloading Console_Getopt-1.2.tgz ...
...done: 3,370 bytes
install ok: Console_Getopt 1.2
downloading XML_RPC-1.1.0.tgz ...
...done: 12,596 bytes
install ok: XML_RPC 1.1.0

You now have a very basic install of PEAR inside your account in the /pear/lib directory, and may want to add that to your PHP include path.

You can install additional packages by name with the following command:

pear install PACKAGENAME

(Be sure to substitute the name of the package desired for PACKAGENAME.)

I just had to install Net/Socket and Net/SMTP (which requires
Auth/SASL). This worked for me in my Modwest account (after following
the initialization instructions above):

pear install Net_Socket
pear install Auth_SASL
pear install Net_SMTP

If you cannot get connected to mysql with DB.php, make sure you are
using the right path in your php.ini file's include_path setting. It
should be "/pear/lib" (if you have followed the instructions in this
FAQ) instead of the default "/usr/local/lib"
